It reminds me of that famous Margaret Atwood quote: “Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them.” It also reminds me of something written by one of the mods of Sex Worker Problems: “Misandry irritates. Misogyny kills.”

Trailer from the 1920 silent film, Within Our Gates, directed by Oscar Micheaux. The film portrays the hardships blacks faced in Jim Crow America. The subject matter was so controversial at the time, that the film was severely edited. Most prints were destroyed, and the film was considered lost for 70 years until a lone print was discovered in a Spanish archive. Within Our Gates is believed to be the earliest surviving film directed by an African-American filmmaker. The full version of the film is available online.

“Please, do not excuse them. In fact we should be harder on them. We expect white people to hate us. We expect everyone else to not understand us. But black men are supposed to love us. They are supposed to be our allies in this fight. They are supposed to respect and adore and honor us. And yet we find ourselves begging for love and wishing they would care for us. It isn’t right. Love is supposed to be unconditional and yet love from black men is nothing but conditions; they love us IF we look a certain way. They love us IF we act a certain way. That’s not love. And it’s unfortunate that after all this time, in this day and age we still have to ask “why don’t black men love us?”

Last night I was at a YMCA event celebrating the success of its annual Strong Kids fundraising campaign. A video was shown where a man named Anthony explained how he got brain cancer, was paralyzed on the left side of his body, and was rehabilitated by trainers at his local Y. The climatic moment came when Anthony explained how he was so happy that he could hold his son again, because he’d been so afraid that his son would think that he didn’t love him anymore. During the video, Anthony’s son ran out of the audience and started clapping at the screen, Anthony followed close behind him.

It’s waiters, gas station attendants, and housekeepers becoming the most interesting people in the world. It’s churches that are compelling enough to enter. It’s McDonald’s being a luxury. It’s the realization that you may have been born in the wrong country. Travel is a smile that leads to a conversation in broken English. It’s the epiphany that pretty girls smile the same way all over the world. Travel is tipping 10% and being embraced for it. Travel is the same white T-shirt again tomorrow. Travel is accented sex after good wine and too many unfiltered cigarettes. Travel is flowing in the back of a bus with giggly strangers. It’s a street full of bearded backpackers looking down at maps. Travel is wishing for one more bite of whatever that just was. It’s the rediscovery of walking somewhere. It’s sharing a bottle of liquor on an overnight train with a new friend. Travel is “Maybe I don’t have to do it that way when I get back home.” It’s nostalgia for studying abroad that one semester. Travel is realizing that “age thirty” should be shed of its goddamn stigma.”
